Ogbourne CofE Primary School is celebrating its achievement of the Bristol Standard, a respected self-evaluation framework for early years and play settings that supports continuous quality improvement. The accompanying feedback letter was rich with praise, recognising how the framework had been used as a meaningful tool to deepen reflection and drive purposeful improvement across the school and its culture.

From the moment a child begins their school journey, Ogbourne’s vision and values are evident. As soon as the children enter the building, beautiful artwork created by the young people is on display, bringing the vision “From small streams, big rivers flow” to life.
The Bristol Standard commended Ogbourne’s strong position within its rural community, highlighting how this sense of place is woven through regular visits and meaningful involvement with local groups and events.
The school’s thoughtful approach to its indoor and outdoor environments was praised for its creativity, which in turn supports children’s emotional, physical and sensory development. Furthermore, children are allowed to explore barefoot on different surfaces, both inside and out, reflecting a strong understanding of early childhood development.

Transitions are handled with equal sensitivity, with practical measures—such as later start times for meaningful conversations with teachers and inviting parents on trips—demonstrating a thoughtful, relationship-based approach.
Ogbourne’s development targets build on its strengths and aim to enhance children’s experiences, supported by plans for regular formal supervision to promote staff wellbeing and professional growth.
Lucy Crump, Principal of Ogbourne CofE Primary School comments: “We are thrilled to have achieved The Bristol Standard which officiates the holistic and everyday practice we provide for the children in our care.”
Nick Lewis, CEO of Excalibur Academies Trust concludes: “This is wonderful news and speaks volumes to the expertise and dedication of staff at Ogbourne. Whilst this is well known in the local area, the community has an offer that is formally recognised as excellent.”
